AFRICA FILM FESTIVAL
The Architect Africa Film Festival 2007 presented by Cinema Nouveau screened by Jameson in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town from mid August to early September which drew to a close has been a much-anticipated success.  The Architects Collective sent out this press release:

The Festival was a celebration of architecture, which took place in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town from 17 August to 6 September. During that time inspiring films from around the world were shown at Cinema Nouveau screened by Jameson venues in Rosebank, Gateway and Cavendish.

Two exhibitions were also curated alongside the Film Festival. Sharpcity’s exhibition on Contemporary SA Architecture, which was originally curated for the Sao Paulo Biennale 2005, was displayed in Johannesburg and Cape Town; while a selection of photographs on Art Deco architecture was put together by the Durban Art Deco Society and the Ethekwini Metro.

Organising the Festival 2007 was an extraordinary experience, with overwhelming interest and support displayed by everyone involved in this initiative.

Special thanks go to the South African Institute of Architects, for their endorsement, CPD validation and publicity efforts.

The inauguration took place in Rosebank, Johannesburg, at the Cinema Nouveau on 15 August 2007.  The opening film was “Caracas, the Informal City”, directed by Rob Schroeder and produced by George Brugmans.  Schroeder and Brugmans were guest speakers after the welcome of Karen Eicker and speeches of SAIA’s President Hassan Asmal and Dr Philip Harrison, Executive Director of Development Planning & Urban Management, City of Johannesburg.

The final attendance figure for the Film Festival, as supplied by Ster Kinekor, was 3,825 – with 1,592 tickets sold in Johannesburg; 878 in Durban; and 1,355 in Cape Town.
